What Is a List Serve?
Briefly... a listserve (also known as a discussion list or mailing list ) is simply a discussion group using e-mail on the Internet. It allows users to place themselves on electronic mailing lists.
When you subscribe to a list, your name and e-mail address is automatically added to the list. Within a few minutes (or a few hours, depending on your Internet Service Provider), you will receive a letter of welcome (via e-mail) telling you about the list and confirming your subscription and password. From that time on, you will receive all e-mail (postings) sent to the list by its members. You may follow the discussions or join in on them. If you respond, you can send your response to the list (in which case, all members of the list will receive it), or to an individual on the list. You can unsubscribe from the list at any time.
How Do I Join the List Serve?
Subscribing and unsubscribing are done on the Web using the link below.
http://rb.enter.net/mailman/listinfo/bmmug-list
Once you have subscribed to the list, you can post your messages to:
bmmug-list@buxmontmug.org
These links also appear in the footer of all list messages.
HTML-formatted posts will be stripped of their HTML attachments and plain text forwarded to the list, rather than messages being bounced back to the sender. That will make it easier for those of you who forget or have difficulty posting in plain text -- especially AOL subscribers.
If you're receiving multiple copies of list messages, you may have had multiple addresses subscribed before with one or more inactive subscriptions. You'll need to adjust your subscriptions under each email address to either unsubscribe them or disable mail delivery on the ones you don't want to be active.
If you prefer the digest mode instead of individual messages, set that preference also on your list management page. Digests are now set to go out at least once a day, more often when the list is active.
The list is now being archived; the link to the new archives is in the headers of each message, as well as your individual management page. Archives are available only to subscribers. You'll need the password in your welcome message to access them (save that welcome message).
The Bux-Mont MUG List Serve is currently hosted on a Macintosh XServe G5 running OS-X Server.
If you have any questions or problems, please contact bmmug-list-owner@buxmontmug.org.
